Scuba diving in Pattaya
What you need to know...
How to get there
Getting to Pattaya is surprisingly easy and affordable. Located just a two-hour drive from Bangkok, it’s a convenient getaway. Buses run frequently between Bangkok and Pattaya, with tickets costing around 200 THB. Alternatively, you can hire a private taxi or use a rideshare service for added convenience.
Dive Sites in Pattaya
Pattaya boasts a variety of dive sites suitable for all levels. The area is divided into two main diving zones: the Near Islands and the Far Islands.
The Near Islands, like Koh Larn and Koh Sak, are ideal for beginners with relatively shallow waters and calm currents. On my first dive at Koh Larn, I was amazed by the abundance of marine life, from clownfish darting between anemones to curious pufferfish.
The Far Islands, such as Koh Rin and Koh Khram, are more suited for intermediate and advanced divers. These sites offer deeper dives, better visibility, and sometimes even encounters with larger marine life. Koh Rin, for example, is famous for its vibrant coral gardens and the occasional sighting of barracudas and moray eels.
For those interested in wreck diving, Pattaya has several fascinating shipwrecks, including the HTMS Khram, a former naval vessel intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef but also, the HTMS Kut and HTMS Mattaphon. Exploring the wreck felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by schools of batfish and snappers.
Best Time to Dive
Pattaya is a year-round diving destination, but the best conditions are generally from November to April when the weather is drier, and the seas are calmer. Visibility varies from 5 to 20 meters depending on the season and location, so it’s always a good idea to check the forecast and consult with local dive shops beforehand.
Dive Shops and Certification
If you’re not already certified, Pattaya is an excellent place to get your PADI or SSI certification. Numerous dive shops offer courses tailored to different skill levels. I completed my Open Water, Advanced Open Water and Rescue course with a reputable local operator, and the instructors were knowledgeable, patient, and fun.
For certified divers, most dive shops offer packages that include equipment rental, transportation to dive sites, and lunch. Prices are competitive, and it’s worth comparing a few options to find the best fit for your needs.
Marine Life and Conservation
While Pattaya may not rival destinations like the Similan Islands in terms of pristine conditions, it still offers a rich variety of marine life. On my dives, I encountered everything from tiny nudibranchs to graceful rays gliding along the sandy bottom. However, some areas show signs of environmental stress, so it’s crucial to practice responsible diving. Avoid touching corals, maintain good buoyancy control, and consider supporting dive shops that engage in conservation efforts.
What to Pack
While most dive shops provide gear, you might prefer to bring your own mask, snorkel, and dive computer for comfort and familiarity. Don’t forget essentials like sunscreen (reef-safe, of course), a reusable water bottle, and a lightweight towel. If you’re diving multiple days, a rash guard or wetsuit is a good idea to prevent irritation from prolonged exposure to seawater.
Beyond Diving
Pattaya offers plenty to explore above water as well. After a day of diving, unwind at a beachfront bar on Jomtien Beach, or indulge in a traditional Thai massage to soothe your muscles. If you’re into nightlife, Walking Street provides an eclectic mix of bars, restaurants, and live music. For a quieter evening, I enjoyed a seafood feast at a local eatery with stunning sunset views.
Final Thoughts
Scuba diving in Pattaya might surprise you with its accessibility, variety, and charm. Whether you’re there to learn the basics or explore deep wrecks, Pattaya offers something for every diver. Just remember to respect the marine environment, plan your dives wisely, and soak in the vibrant culture of this coastal gem.
While it will obviously not be anywhere near the splendid 40 meter visibility and crystal clear water of places such as Koh Tao or Koh Lanta, the practicality and easiness to get there is something that you definitely can't find anywhere else.
Happy Diving !
